John Elliott Derieux, 80, of Nellysford, passed away Friday, February 12, 2010, in Waynesboro.
Born February 18, 1929, in Norfolk, he was a son of the late Willard J. and Mary (Elliott) Derieux. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Mr. Derieux served during the Korean War as a member of the Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. An educator, John pursued his undergraduate degree in music at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. He received his Master’s in music from Columbia University, and also studied at Julliard. For many years John was the band director at Northside Junior High in Norfolk, and later worked with young band directors in the public school system. Since moving to Nellysford from Virginia Beach, John has been very active in the Waynesboro YMCA community, an activity which he shared with many of his close friends.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother Justin Derieux.
He is survived by his wife, Letitia (Whitten) Derieux, with whom he shared a devoted and blessed union of more than 32 years. One sister, Mary Virginia Hastings and her husband Bob, of Richmond; sister-in-law, Delores Derieux; three nieces and three nephews also survive him.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., on Sunday, February 14, 2010, in the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes & Crematory, 618 West Main Street, with Rev. Dr. Cynthia Long, officiating.
The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 12:30 to 2:00 P.M., at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, friends and relatives are invited to make contributions to the Almost Home Pet Adoption Center, 29 Stagebridge Rd., Lovingston, VA 22949, or to a college music fund of their choice.
